ABOUT
Open Studios 2018, Anki with Cinnamon Teal
Anki Gelb, from Stockholm Sweden, moved to the US in 1984. I’m a contemporary artist working mainly with oil in my studio at Industrial Center Building (ICB) in Sausalito, California.
My journey with art began long before I picked up a brush. For years, I admired others’ work, harboring a quiet longing to create with paint myself. It wasn’t until after I stepped away from my business career that I finally embraced this passion.
Since then, I’ve immersed myself in college art classes and regularly attend workshops to explore new techniques and mediums. Though I experiment widely, I always find myself drawn back to oils—there’s something about their richness and versatility that speaks to my artistic voice.
My work has appeared in numerous juried exhibits throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, and I’m honored that my paintings have found homes in public and private collections both nationally and internationally. These days, I split my time between the Bay Area, Bend, Oregon, and Stockholm, Sweden, finding inspiration in each of these diverse landscapes.
While proud of my professional accomplishments, discovering my artistic voice has brought a fulfillment I’d long been seeking.
Statement
My paintings reflect the light and colors of my native country, Sweden. The range varies from the spare light of winter when colors are very subtle to the intense, long daylight of summer when colors are saturated. Color, shapes and lines are very important in the expression of my art that’s frequently minimalistic, which is another Scandinavian influence. Although my art has moved from representational towards abstraction, my inspiration is still influenced by nature and my love for the natural world. I find the painting process absorbing; it’s constantly changing during the process and the outcome is sometimes surprisingly different from my initial idea. This creative dynamic keeps the painting process dynamic and intriguing.
